Steve Schneider Listed Among Green Technology Leaders of North Bay

March 24, 2011 1 comment

Congratulations to ZAP Jonway Co-CEO Steve Schneider for being listed in the North Bay Business Journal’s list of 46 leaders in the Green Technology business community. Published in the March 21 issue of the North Bay Business Journal, the report highlights 46 North Bay professionals in various fields who have been leading development and implementation of environmentally sustainable technologies, such as solar electric and geothermal energy, erosion control for better stream water quality and energy-efficient construction.

Steve Schneider, Co-CEO of ZAP Jonway

Other notable inclusions to the list, to name just a few, are Mike Benziger of Benziger Family Winery, Grant Davis of the Sonoma County Water Agency, Greg Fowler of Constellation Wines, Ann Hancock of the Climate Protection Campaign, John Kennedy of Autodesk, and John Schaeffer of Real Goods Solar.

Schneider said his interest in electric cars and green technologies started at an early age.  When he was very young, his parents moved the family away from the hectic urban-lifestyle of New York to raise their children on the undeveloped island nation of Roatan off the coast of Honduras. Schneider said he was literally cut off from civilization, with no running water, no electricity, no television, no radio, no roads and no cars.  It helped him develop an appreciation for the environment which he still carries to this day. Ironically, his father was the first person to introduce a motor vehicle to Roatan, a moment Schneider remembers fondly and one that apparently made an indelible impression upon him throughout his career.  After moving back to the United States, Schneider’s first job was working at an auto dealership at the age of 17.

Documentary “What is the Electric Car?” Santa Rosa Showing Feb. 17

UPDATE: Hear Scott duPont being interviewed on Santa Rosa’s News/Talk Radio KSRO 1350 AM - Click Here

Film Answers that Question as Electric Cars Start Arriving in California Showrooms

"What is the Electric Car?" LogoJust as 100% Electric cars start arriving in Northern California showrooms, a timely documentary film “What is the Electric Car?” will have its Santa Rosa Premiere on Thursday, February 17th. The film will screen at 7pm at Summerfield Cinemas.

The movie runs 75 minutes and several of the “star cars” from the film will be in attendance! Several cast members will also be on hand after the film including Santa Rosa resident Ginny Medeiros along with a few of the producers who will do a short Q & A after the special screening. Santa Rosa is the 8th tour stop of the popular film which is touring the country as the producers hope to educate current drivers and dispel common “myths” and misconceptions about electric cars to those including students already driving and to those getting their driver’s license for the 1st time.

The film answers the many questions millions have about the new electric cars. This timely feature film contains insightful interviews with key manufacturers, vendors, drivers & pioneers in the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry predicted to explode over the next 12 months and create thousands of jobs as new cars like the Chevy VOLT and Nissan Leaf join the ZAP EVs arriving in California showrooms this month. Viewers will likely consider these new EVs (which plug into a 110 outlet & don’t use a drop of gasoline or oil), before purchasing their next car. Warren Buffet has quoted: “All cars will be electric in 20 years”.

Many celebrities contributed to this “green themed”, enlightening film including Jay Leno (who let producers in his garage to film his 1908 Baker Electric), Ed Begley, Jr.

(filmed at the ‘Go Green Expo’), and “Baywatch” star and EV activist Alexandra Paul who hosted a behind the scenes chapter for the DVD to be released this spring. Renowned Artist Romero Britto (www.Britto.com) spent 2 months painting the world’s 1st BRITTO TM electric car (a Tango T-600 Commuter Car), and Chábeli Iglesias just signed on to host the film’s Spanish language version of the film which will be available for Latin American and Spanish speaking markets later this year.

The film has already screened in several cities including Miami Beach, Orlando, & West Palm Beach, Florida and most recently in Santa Monica, Hollywood & Santa Barbara, California including a star studded west coast premiere at the famous Egyptian Theatre. Producers are now planning at least 25 more theatrical screenings as well as special educational screenings at elementary and high schools around the state before taking the film back east to New York and then on to Barcelona, Spain.

The film was shot on locations around Michigan, California, Florida, including Jay Leno’s Garage, the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Int’l. Detroit Auto Show & the Henry Ford Museum. The film makers are now doing weekly giveaways (DVDs, t-shirts, etc.) and just today announced another contest from ZAP (one of the film premiere’s sponsors – based in Santa Rosa) to hold its second contest to give away a FREE Electric Car to one of the film’s lucky FaceBook friends! The ZAP Jonway Electric Taxi SUV is anticipated for production by June 2011.

The final payment of US$19 million related to the acquisition was made on January 21, 2011 with the funding from Cathaya Capital. Total cash payment for the acquisition of 51 percent of Jonway Automobile was US$30,030,000.

With ZAP’s electric vehicle (EV) technology expertise and international experience, the combined company intends to build the necessary production platform to address the Chinese EV market. The newly combined company, to be renamed ZAP Jonway, will leverage Jonway Auto’s A380 SUV, as well as its established distribution channels to the Chinese market with over 90 direct dealers. ZAP Jonway will manufacture and sell SUVs powered by ZAP’s electric drive train and expects to benefit from the 60,000 RMB (approximately US$9,000) government incentives granted to electric car buyers.

Jonway Automobile anticipates vehicle sales for its gasoline A380 SUV to increase by 40 percent to over 10,000 vehicles in 2011 compared to 2010. In 2009, its first year of sales, Jonway Automobile experienced sales of 4,000 SUVs, which rose to over 7,000 in 2010, each with a sales price of around US$11,000. ZAP Jonway is currently adding to its manufacturing production lines to deliver the A380 EV SUV by the anticipated date of June 2011 and ZAP’s ALIAS EV roadster by September 2011.

The ZAP Alias Electric Car

The Alias is anticipated for production by September 2011.

“Jonway Automobile’s revenues from selling its gasoline vehicles will help build the foundation for ZAP Jonway’s growth in the electric vehicle market, allowing ZAP to focus on further strengthening its EV technology, reinforced by Jonway’s manufacturing production expertise and ready market access to China,” said Dr. Priscilla Lu, founder and general partner of Cathaya Capital, a Cross Border Fund focused on China. Dr. Lu has served as Chairman of the Board for ZAP since September 2009. Cathaya Capital has invested US$36 million in ZAP since September 2009 with the goal of completing this 51 percent acquisition of Jonway Automobile.

Jonway Automobile is ISO 9000 certified with over 3.6 million square feet of fully provisioned factory space on 141 acres of land.
