ZAP 100% Electric SUV Taxi in Korea EV Challenge

ZAP electric vehicles take to the road for the first time in a 200km rally

ZAP 100% Electric SUV Taxi in Korea EV Challenge

SEOUL, Korea (March 30, 2010) – The first-ever Korea Electric Vehicle Challenge took place this weekend outside Seoul with electric car pioneer ZAP (OTCBB: ZAAP) and distribution partner in Korea Samyang Optics (008080.KS) entering two vehicles under development, the Alias electric car and A380 electric SUV.

This was ZAP’s first public demonstration of the Alias and SUV. ZAP’s two 100 percent electric vehicles (EVs) drove along a 200km/124.3mi route at an average speed of 85kph (52.8mph) as part of the EV Challenge. Using a new lithium battery system, the ZAP SUV drove 195 km, on a single charge.  The ZAP Alias concept car completed 50 miles on traditional lead acid batteries before requiring a recharge.  ZAP will be using lithium batteries in a test this May.  The three-day event included manufacturers of electric vehicles, batteries, chargers and components with parades and an exhibition.

Samyang Optics hosted ZAP as part of their ongoing partnership to distribute electric vehicles in Korea. The two companies have a partnership to distribute and potentially manufacture electric vehicles in Korea with ZAP providing electric vehicle expertise.

The Korean EV Challenge was sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, as well as the Ministry of Environment.  The Korean government has announced support and investment in electric vehicles over the next few years.  The event was launched by government and business leaders including Korean ministers, congressmen and a representative from the Korean Electric Vehicle Association.  Samyang CEO Christopher Kang and ZAP CEO Steve Schneider also attended.

The ZAP electric SUV is being developed through a partnership between ZAP and auto manufacturer Zhejiang Jonway Automobile Co. Ltd. targeting the China fleet market. The ZAP Alias electric car is entered in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize taking place this year. For more information visit https://zapglobal.wordpress.com.

I wish I could buy that suv soon in the United States, that is a great electric suv!

The initial target market is fleets.

I see that the initial market is fleets, will ZAP offer special orders so people could order them?

    • April 13, 2010 at 11:41 pm

That would be RUFF. Car owners need dealer and fleet support, with parts, service, financing, etc., which has been one of the things missing with electrics, but it all depends. The industry is so new and we want to encourage people to drive electric. The SUV is going to take time and we will be selling them in fleets initially, but if you are interested in going electric today, call ZAP’s sales department at 707-525-8658, or work with a ZAP dealer near you to try to bring more to your community. We have several electric vehicles that most people can use for their daily transportation. The best way for each of us to ensure an electric future is to start purchasing electric vehicles TODAY.

SUV Electric vehicles is great. But the problem is battery will get charge very 200 kilometers.

    • April 27, 2011 at 10:00 am

Hey, that’s 200 km without using gas. Don’t knock it ’til you try it. The technology will improve if more people are using it.
